Council Tax Bailiffs

Council Tax Bailiffs: What You Need To Know

If you have fallen behind on your council tax payments, your local authority may take enforcement action to recover the debt. In some cases, this can result in bailiffs (enforcement agents) being instructed to collect the outstanding balance.

Before a bailiff visits, you should normally receive a Notice of Enforcement giving you an opportunity to deal with the debt.

Council Tax Bailiffs Can:

  • Visit your property to discuss the debt
  • Add enforcement fees where permitted
  • Take control of certain goods in some circumstances
  • Clamp or remove vehicles that are not exempt

Council Tax Bailiffs Cannot Usually:

  • Force entry on their first visit
  • Take essential household items
  • Take belongings that do not belong to you
  • Harass or threaten you

What Should You Do?

  • Do not ignore letters or notices
  • Check that the debt details are correct
  • Keep records of all correspondence
  • Seek advice as early as possible

The earlier you act, the more options you may have available.
